Harem Anime: opinions, rules, and favorites?

We have all seen these shows, one boy or girl with the magic perfume or whatever that makes them irresistible to everyone around them. I personally have always loved the Tenchi series because its a staple in the genre and a classic. but i want some opinions from everyone else, what shows do you like? and lets talk about what we all think makes them so successful or what rules they should follow to stay that way.
A boy has the right to dream. There are endless possibilities stretched out before him. What awaits him down the path he will then have to choose. The boy doesn't always now. At some point, the boy then becomes an adult and learns what he was able to become. Joy and Sadness forever will accompany this. He is confronted with a choice. When this happens, does he bid his past farewell in his heart? Once a boy becomes an adult, he can no longer go back to being a boy. The boy is now a man. Only one thing can be said: "A boy has the right to dream, for those endless possbilities are stretched out before him". We must remember... all men were once boys

I like a few, but the only reason I watch them is mainly the comedy.

As an example, I like To LoveRu. I think what makes it successful is simple... Fan service with good comedy and a side dish of a reasonable non-cringeworthy plot lol. Which they've taken to the next level in Darkness. The series also has a fairly good character development compared to other series in the same category. Also I think harems tend to be open-ended so that everyone isn't mad. No one needs to be happy, they just need to not piss some of their fan base off by choosing one girl over the other xD. At least that's what I think. If not open-ended, they often end up gathering a lot of hate. And if they do all the endings at once, it won't make sense and again will garner a bunch of haters.

I second this. I don't actively seek out harems, but To LOVE-Ru has to be my favorite of that kind. I even rewatch it sometimes. Other than that, I don't know if DanMachi counts as a harem or not, but it's a great casual watch for someone looking for simple entertainment atm like me. It also has decent action and references to video game mechanics, A++. Another more slice of life than harem show but still has some elements would be GJ-bu, a great relaxation watch for those looking to unwind. It has some funny romantic-esque elements, but like I said the focus is on slice of life, so it's mostly fun stuff rather than dumb protagonist who unwittingly charms females.

I haven't watched too many harem anime. I've only five finished Rosario x Vampire, and that was ok. It had a poor plot outside the haremness, but it was ok.
Overall, I can't say much, since I've watched only one, but they can be good if done well, but they're not my cup of tea.

Thank you for realizing this, so many of my friends dont realize you cant pick a boy or girl because you alienate your audience, more often then not the show will just imply their favorite, and thats ok

I have a mixed opinion regarding the harem. It's all about the mood and setting to the anime itself that influences if the harem works or not. If the plot revolves around the harem almost directly (Ouran High School Host Club), then the harem works. If the plot isn't QUITE focused on the harem (Infinite Stratos), the strength of the harem depends on the characters and their development. However, if the plot is way too dark or overshadows the strength of the harem (Elfen Lied), then the harem falls flat.

This is simply based on my experiences. I could be wrong, and I wouldn't be mad if I was.

Outlaw Star is my favorite harem series. I mean 3 women, a guy and a half on a ship? j/k

Tenchi is probably the most famous anime harem show I would think. Ouran is is probably the most famous reverse harem show. Both are good. Harems basically seem like the same thing most of the time. :/ But, we all know why harem shows are still around.

well harems are mostly around for us fans to enjoy, the main character is usually so bland and simple that were meant to be able to take his/her place in our own mind and find and love to girls/boys/ we like the best (ryoko from tenchi)

I never gave the harem genre much thought. If there's a story and the characters are well developed, then that's fine by me. The first one I watched was Tenchi because it was on TV at the time. Following this I watched Ouran High School Host Club on youtube when I was in high school.

I like mild harem period fantasy animes, my favorite is Lord Marksman and Vanadis well, I didn't know thought of it as a harem at first but 7 Sexy Warrior Princesses and a Duke. Hope it has another season though.
