    Kyoto Animation Arson

I'm sure most people here have heard of the devastating, senseless, barbaric arson attack at Kyoto Animation that kill 33 and injured even more.
Here's a story for those who haven't heard.
Kyoto Animation fire: Police name suspect after studio blaze - BBC News
The arsonist bastard spread gasoline inside the building, and set it on fire because he thought the studio plagiarized his work.
There's a GoFundMe set up by American studio Sentai Filmworks that has already raised over $1.6 Million in only 2 days
This senseless, horrid act is deplorable, but seeing the amount raised is incredible, and shows how great crowdfunding sites can be. It shows the power people have to help those in need after a tragedy like this.

If you're not familiar with Kyoto Animation z they're most well known for the Free! Series, and the anime adaptation of A Silent Voice.

Damn, I hadn't heard about this. I read about it a little this morning after seeing this thread. I think the arsonist was probably delusional. Apparently he's been behind bars for a while at least once before, caused a lot of problems with neighbours, hitting walls, trying to attack them, etc. Mental health diagnoses. I think this whole idea of his work being plagiarised was just a strange fantasy and for whatever reason he decided to take that out on those people.

Life sentence hopefully. I think in cases like this the death penalty is still a thing, but that'd be the easy way out.

It is pathetic but I am not surprised in the least.

Man, what horrible news. I haven't seen much from this studio outside of Full Metal Panic and Haruhi but still it's sad to hear that so many lives were lost to this pointless bullshit. I hope the victims and their families get all the care and support that they can get from all of this.

When I went to learn look for an article, I saw the BBC one, and one from the New York Times that mentioned an attack as a Japanese studio that was "known for hiring women", but didn't mention it was an Arson.
It's Fucking appalling that they took something this tragic, and used it for an agenda.

My boss showed me this news the morning it happened, it's pretty horrible...I went through highschool watching Haruhi & my little sister watched Lucky Star all the time. What a shame. Apparently the guy is some schizo who thought that they stole a novel or plot from him? Surprisingly he survived through the event but he will hang for sure. Japan, unlike the U.S., delivers on death penalties very quickly, usually within a year for particularly heinous crimes.

I'm definitely not happy about the media spin on this as an attack on women in general or that the guy was some incel or something. He was mentally ill and it's a tragedy, but those are all the facts we have at the moment and to extrapolate further would just drive a deeper divide between people. Might i add that only Western media outlets are putting that gender spin on the event.
Alternatively, I have seen some KyoAni haters saying that the studio got what it deserved and not because they hate the studio's anime, but in fact due to their treatment of men. They might be known for hiring women, but they were also known for refusing to hire/promote men & paying them far less. I disagree with the sentiment that they should be burned alive, but I also disagree with the media's portrayal of them as heroes or martyrs for equality. The attack wasn't about that and shouldn't be viewed through that lens if at all possible.

I hope they can recover and go on to make more classics.

Oh yeah, I'm sure that the families sure appreciate these pricks standing on the graves of their loved ones to push their world view. I suppose it's not surprising. When shit like this goes down, you'll have all sorts of people coming from out of the woodwork to try to spin it one way or the other. Worse yet, we get people who find this to be the perfect oppourtunity to spew some edgy crap like this.

Aint humanity grand? When I get paid this week, I think I'm gonna make a donation to Kyoto animation. They deserve better than this.

Not even that the motivation had nothing to do with woman, it was a complete coincidence.
