Re:Zero Starting Life in a Different World

Re:Zero is an ongoing anime that, at first, seemed like another run of the mill "boy gets transported to new world because ________" kind of anime, like The Familiar of Zero, Is it Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon, and Konosuba, but after the first few episodes, this anime hits the ground running, and becomes pretty damn good.
The main character, Subaru, is a bit of a NEET, like most protagonists in this kind of anime, and as he's walking home from getting food, he's randomly transported to a new world, filled with magic, knights, and adorable talking cats.
But things start to go wrong fairly quickly, as he;s jump by a gang of thugs, and finds he has no powers himself! Luckily, a cute young girl with gray hair, and a cute cat with magical powers saves him! And with that, they become travelling companions of sorts.
Re:Zero Starting Life in a Different World-305702-jpgAs they're travelling, a young thief steals something very important to the gray haired girl, and as they search for it, they find the thief, but also find a very powerful witch, and both SUbaru and the gray haired girl die! In the fist episode! (part2)! Luckily, this is where you find out about Subaru's real power, which he coins "Return From Death", and as it sounds, whenever he dies, he's returned to a certain point back in time, and no one remembers anything that happened after that point, except for Subaru! And thus begins a rather interesting adventure.

To be honest, the fist few episodes of this show are pretty mediocre. They do very little to utilize Subaru's powers, and he doesn't do all that much to take advantage of it. However, once he gets the gray haired girls emblem back, things start to get MUCH better. He starts utilizing his power more, and the other characters get really interesting as well.
Not to mention, this show gets pretty damn dark, at least for a shonen anime. I'm not going to say much else, since that would be spoiling a pretty damn good story for a pretty damn good anime.
But I will say, get past the first 3 episodes, and you'll be in for a treat.

Sounds like fun! I'll definitely have to check this out. I'll try and power through the first couple of episodes like you say, and I'm intrigued (if a little nervous) to see how dark things get later on...

Cute talking cats are always a plus, too!

ReZero ended recently, and it was a great anime. They use Subaru's power MUCH better as the anime goes on, and there are some chillingly scary and brutal scenes as well. Subaru ends up being a very wise, determined hero, and that makes the ending that much nicer.
And the fact that he was able to gather multiple kingdoms together to combat a bigger evil shows how well he can manipulate his power.
This is a great anime, and easily the best of the season. Highly recommend it. Just get past the mediocre first few episodes, and you're in for a great ride.

I have a friend of mine who loves this show. He recently introduced me to it. I'm like 7-8 episodes in so far. Really good stuff so far. The charactes seem really cool, especially rem and ram. Kind of interesting to go from Konosuba, which has somewhat of a similar premise, to a show like this that plays it more straight. Really looking forward to see where this show goes.
