Somehow I like characters who used to be evil (Spoilers)

In many anime series, there are evil characters turning good, or at least started to assist the good characters. Many of such evil characters are in fact powerful.

I really like the evil characters turned to the good side while retain their personality of cold, no mercy, etc. when against other new evil foes.

In DBZ for example, Piccolo and Vegeta are two good examples. It's always good to have old foes to become allies. Although in DBZ, neither was able to replace Goku in actual usefulness to "save the world".

Sessumaru from Inu Yasha is another. Although, he was never really that evil to begin with. He was just merciless, and he was fighting against the main character of the show - Inu Yasha.
I am glad the show actually made it clear that he is in fact stronger than Inu Yasha. In one of the movies, it took Sessumaru half a second to defeat two evil demons (knocked both unconscious with a single blow as they tried to attack him), while Inu Yasha and his friends spend half the show tried to deal with the same two demons.

Any other shows have such evil foes turned powerful good characters?
    Do you like them?

Beyblade. Kai Hiwatari was a moody mean gang leader who kept destroying Beyblades and making people cry. Later on he gets put on a team with four other people. He's still a overconfident loner until the last few episodes of the first series where his team mates literally save his life. He becomes, somewhat, a nice guy (Think Vegeta for this guy. Though, sadly, no pink 'BAD MAN' shirt).

I'd say my favorite evil to good character would be "Greed" from Fullmetal Alchemsit Brotherhood.

RE: Somehow I like characters who used to be evil

Vegeta is still evil in my opinion lol.
He simply had a "truce" type of peace with the main characters. His goal was always to make himself stronger so he can defeat Goku. So when more new stronger villains appear, his goal changed to destroy those new villains. He didn't even care about other characters, and he does not fight in team, he just fight there without fighting together. More like a show off of his strength. He knew Goku was stronger than him most of the time, so even he wanted to go "crazy" he would have been stopped by Goku. The only times he was stronger than Goku after returned to the earth were right before Andriod 18 and 17 showed up, as well as he walked out of the time chamber after one year of training for the first time. Those times he was the strongest main character, but he had bigger fish than Goku to fry at the time. Or he probably would have challenged Goku instead of going for the bad guys.

    VEGETA!

That being said, Toriyama has a a habit of converting bad guys over to the good side. here is a list, from what I can remember...

    Oolong
    Ox-King
    Yamcha
    Monster-Beast Giran
    Tien
    Piccolo
    Vegeta
    Android 16
    Android 17
    Android 18
    Dabura
    Majin Buu
    ...

    This ^

Another anime where this happens is Yu Yu Hakusho, most notably with Hiei and Kurama, although with Kurama, he may be a demon criminal, but he wasn't exactly evil to begin with.

EDIT: One more thing, let's not forget good old Outlaw Star. Twilight Suzuka wasn't necessarily "evil", but she was a frickin' serial killer, to be fair.

RE: Somehow I like characters who used to be evil

    I have to disagree on
    Android 16
    Android 17
    Android 18

Android 16 never showed a sign of evil the moment he was activated. Although Dr. Gero warned Android 17 not to release him, because 16 had the power to destroy the world, and nobody was strong enough at the time to stop him (if) he tried it. But he never ever did anything bad beyond took a vehicle by force.

Android 17 and 18, are supposed to be evil in Trunks' future. But not in this time line.
If you read manga, it explained quite clearly. That the "history" was changed.
Not only 17 and 18 are not as violent as their future self, but also they actually become twice stronger than their future counterpart. These "history" were all changed due to the time travel by future Cell. Future Trunks was surprised when 17 took him out in a single blow, because the future 17 wasn't nearly this strong...only half the strength to be exactly. Now the 17 and 18 can even beat Cell before he absorbed half a million human beings.

We all know in the future 20 years from now, 17 and 18 killed all the main characters. 18 killed Krillin. But in this time line, Krillin took her to bed and knocked her up.

Ermmm. What? Is the fact that they are robots programmed to kill Goku not enough reason for you to consider them the "bad guys" of that arc? Yes, sure that intention isn't something they had control over, but you're splitting hairs, here.

RE: Somehow I like characters who used to be evil (Spoilers)

I'm going to present a weird case here that is totally unrelated to Vegeta and DBZ (Sorry, deal with it ) I'm going to have to say that Viral from Gurren Lagann is a pretty sweet villain turned good. If you want more information, read on.

Let me tell you why this is ass backwards. In the first two arcs, the protagonists Simon and Kamina are trying to get back to the surface and take down the king of the Beastmen who have been keeping them underground, the Spiral King Lordgenome. When Simon takes down Lordgenome, he is warned that when the overall population of the world reaches one million, the moon will crash upon the earth, resulting in total annihilation. Keep in mind that Viral was one of Lordgenome's followers and was one of the few who survived the battle of Teppelin. Later on in the latter two arcs, the population reaches one million, but it turns out that the "moon" was a huge mothership of another race, the Anti-Spirals. The rest of the story doesn't matter because Lordgenome (and Viral) were actually controlling the population for the purpose of preventing the world from utter destruction, making Simon and friends in the first half of the show (from an objective point of view) evil, thus making Lordgenome and Viral good. Boom.
A boy has the right to dream. There are endless possibilities stretched out before him. What awaits him down the path he will then have to choose; the boy doesn't always know. At some point the boy then becomes an adult, and learns what he was able to become. Joy and sadness will forever accompany this. He is confronted with a choice; when this happens, does he bid his past farewell in his heart? Once a boy becomes an adult, he can no longer go back to being a boy; the boy is now a man. Only one thing can be said: "A boy has the right to dream.". For those endless possibilities are stretched out before him.

We must remember...all men were once boys.
