    Top 5 Anime Series

Tell us your top five anime series and maybe give a small explanation(for your number one choice or all if you prefer) as to why its/their your favorite(s).I'll start us off.

1)Escaflowne- This series has a lot going for it in my opinion. It has an amazing story, beautiful scenery, a strong cast of characters and a perfect blend of numerous genres(adventure, romance, mecha, fantasy etc.).

2)Clannad ~After Story- After Story without a doubt is in every way superior to the original.Moving story, excellent character development and in my opinion the best OST's to ever be put in an anime(that I've heard so far anyway). It's also the first and only series to ever make me cry.Don't get the wrong idea, I'm still manly...*sniffs*..*looks around*:dodgy:..alright who wants to fight me!?..hehe jk.

3)Outlaw Star- Do I even have to say anything?I think everybody here knows how great of a series Outlaw Star is.

4)Welcome To The NHK- What I like most about this series is it's ability to mix humor with sadness so perfectly.Again, the story, cast, character development and all around quality of this show is top-notch.Its hands down the funniest anime I've seen.

5)Fooly Cooly- I find that its very rare to come across a series that you can re-watch over and over again and still get something new out of it every time.A lot of people find this show to be confusing, but that's only because they don't look past the surface.Once you get past the surface and start to notice all of the symbolism(and it has tons) you'll find that its a brilliant coming of age story.I've re-watched FLCL way more times than any other series and that alone is enough reason to place it in my top five.

Sorry, I made the explanations a little bit longer than what I had originally planned to.

    RE: Top 5 Anime Series

I thought your avatar looked familiar. Falken, no? (If I remember Escaflowne properly.)

    1. Outlaw Star: It just has something amazing about it that most other series don't. Awesome action, a great cast of characters, an amazing soundtrack, a compelling story and a dash of humour all in one neat package. There are lots of people who say Cowboy Bebop is better. I think Cowboy Bebop is great, but there's just something special about Outlaw Star that caught my eye. I wouldn't have made Outlaw Star UK otherwise.

    2. Monster: This is quite a long series with over seventy episodes, and is more of an adult series with quite a lot of chilling scenes. From the title you'd probably think it's a mindless horror, but it's actually more of a drama/crime/thriller with an excellent story. The protagonist is Dr Tenma, a genius neurosurgeon falsely convicted of a major crime, now on the run as a fugitive. In a nutshell he has to solve the mystery behind the murders and find out who the monster really is. You should at least check out the first five episodes, and if you do watch the Jap dub. I usually watch English dubs but in this case the Jap one is much superior.

    3. Code Geass - Lelouch of the Rebellion: Like most mecha anime series, this is about a young man who by chance is able to come into possession of such a machine. However, he also comes into possession of a unique power that allows him to take over the minds of anybody he makes eye contact with. Japan is invaded by The Holy Britannian Empire, with any Japanese survivors confined to a small region known as Area 11. Without giving a whole plot summary, I will say that this almost made the number two spot. It's fantastic and in almost every episode there are several edge-of-your-seat moments. Great story, good cast, great art quality and I liked the soundtrack.

    4. Escaflowne: As Aaron said, something that's great about Escaflowne is the blend of genres. This is a series about a girl called Hitomi who is transported to a fantasy world. The characters have a lot of life in them, with noticeably good (at least in my opinion) voice acting. A lot of TV and anime series feature major goals in the plot that might change once or twice. There are new scenarios all the time in Escaflowne. Watch it.

    5. Neon Genesis Evangelion: What I love about this anime is how it goes into issues of human psychology in quite a subtle manner. Yet, it's a series that often has you thinking. The series takes place in "Tokyo-3", a city which is often under attack by strange beings known as Angels. You can probably guess what's next: it's up to a mech pilot to keep things under control. If it was just that, I'd write it off as a generic mech series. Fortunately, Evangelion has much more going for it. I suggest checking out the first few episodes on YouTube.

(Wow, my explanations were a lot longer. Oh well!)

    RE: Top 5 Anime Series

    You'd be correct.

I completely agree with you.Cowboy Bebop is good, but Outlaw Star is an all around better series in my opinion.A lot of people try to say that OS is a rip-off of CB, but in all actuality OS aired before CB I believe(not trying to derail the thread).

    RE: Top 5 Anime Series

I would have to disagree with you two about Escaflowne; I can't say I watched it all the way through though, so I guess it might have gotten better.

    1. DeathNote - Talk about great & memorable characters, subtle psychology, madness, humor, and a great plot, not to mention the greatest evil laugh since Snidley Whiplash!

    2. Soul Eater - Funny characters, evil villains, a good plot, weird as anything drawing style, and an interesting concept.

    3. Outlaw Star - Good plot, funny and engrossing characters, nice setting. Only drawbacks are the relative shortness and the voice actor for the best character: Aisha.

    4. Gantz - Dark, short, and bloody; just the way I like 'em! Plus, character growth! Never would've seen THAT coming!

    5. Berserk - Perfect for fans of violent anime with a good message. A pity about the fan disservice.

Another Gantz fan. Nice. I'll have to check out the other two I haven't seen. As for Death Note, it was a brilliant anime with a great story, art quality and soundtrack. Well, up until just over halfway through, that is. When they introduced Near and the other poorly-developed characters they tacked on towards the end, the show's quality, for me, plummeted.

    It's a real shame, really.

Yeah, I more or less stopped watching it at that point. Except, I did like Near's Dice House o' Doom. Yeah, if you liked Gantz, you'll like Berserk. Only problem is that large sections are a bit drawn out. Soul Eater is just plain epic.

    RE: Top 5 Anime Series

    1. Outlaw Star - I'm a steadfast fanboy and proud.

    2. YuYu Hakusho - Lovable characters, fun storyline, and -what is this?- witty dialogue!? Who doesn't wish to be able to pull off a spirit gun sometimes.

    3. Trinity Blood - I'm a sucker for a good exorcist motif. Gotta love the thinly veiled ripoff of the terminator in that one. Also, the fact that the original writer died before it finished adds a wonderful mystique.

    4. Gundam the 08th MS Team - a more realistic depiction of war done with anime. Gripping stories and fantastic combat sequences.

    5. Full Metal Panic? Fumuffo! - after a long day nothing is better than some good wholesome anime comedy. Each episode is a stand alone riot. My friends and I still crack up when someone yells out: "And you call yourself a man Kazuma!?!!?!"

    RE: Top 5 Anime Series

    1) Cowboy Bebop: The first show that got me into anime. Really love how they took time to go into each individual character's background and every adventure they had kept you watching.

    2) Samurai Champloo: Samurai's mixed with hip hop and has the sort of cowboy bebop feeling to it. Was a unique and good approach. I really enjoyed it.

    3) Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood: I did enjoy the original FMA but Brotherhood was just so much more fun to watch. It had epic alchemy packed battles and was a show that could make me laugh. The first FMA was just to gloomy for me.

    4) Outlaw Star: Like some other animes I absolutely love the space theme. Space Ports, space battles, its something that we can spread on and invent. We don't have limited knowledge of whats out there or what we could do out there so lets leave that to our imagination, or watch outlaw star! "Aisha was my first catgirl"

    5) Baccano: Besides FLCL this is one of the most random animes I've seen. Your jumping from so many different perspectives, characters, locations, even time (when I mean time this show could jump to something happening 200 years ago). It has the whole mafia jazzy theme to it kinda of hard to follow at times but I thought it was worth it.

Honorable mentions: soul eater, darker than black, mobile suit gundam wing, trigun.. gonna stop there so many more haha XD
"(21:31:30) Kokirininja: will she notice the globs of glue....?
(21:31:56) TheMachetejoe: Nope! I'm as stealthy as a mouse...on bear adrenaline."
"(18:42:32) Hannah: I like to giggle when I sit in chairs."
"(19:46:20) lloydSSJ4: I was contemplating my similarities with Fred Luo, while making a sandwhich."
    Referring to Spammers
(23:27:52) Mantis: I'm thinking of banning the whole of the Philippines from the site.
(23:27:56) Mantis: The whole bloody country.
(23:28:05) Mantis: Because that's where most of the parasites come from.

    RE: Top 5 Anime Series

    1) Dragon Ball Z- Although I would NEVER watch it again just because it's so long and boring when they power up for five episodes. Still, this was like the father of anime for me and I have so many good memories from watching the show. It's also awesome for the cultural impact it's had on other animes and etc. I'll never forget being a kid and firing Kamehamehas at my friends whenever we had snowball fights. You have not seen anime unless you've seen Dragon Ball Z (And I pray that there is nobody here who has not seen this epic anime classic)

    2) Kino's Journey- Uber philosophical anime, pretty much what I use for the basis of all my discussions on life. Really makes you think after every episode and it's quite short so it's not a pain to watch mass filler episodes etc. Also has really sweet gun slinging action and turned me into a trenchcoat/pistol fanatic.

    3) Highschool of the Dead- Relatively new one about a zombie virus spreading around the world, leaving a small group of high school kids to survive in. A must see for any fan of both anime and zombies. This anime was really one of the best ones to capture the survival horror genre of zombies and anime together. No goofy talking zombies that shout "brains" but actual walking corpses that give you the feeling of locking your doors after every episode. A note of warning: There is a ridiculous amount of fan-service in this anime that it's not even funny, not an anime to watch around the workplace, you have been warned!

    4) Lucky Star- No story plot, just follows four high school girls in there everyday lives. What makes this anime possible is that one of the main characters is a huge otaku and the fact that other anime's are constantly parodied and referenced in this anime itself!

    5) Death Note- Great detective anime, always couldn't wait to see the next episode. A lot of deep thinking from the protagonist of the series and raises some serious moral questions on what is right or wrong.

I didn't put Outlaw Star here because it's just a given that it's on the list of best animes ever. I'm also really bad at picking favorites >X( If I had the option, I would just put all these in one rank with Outlaw Star included.
This is my signature, isn't it great?

You may end up being very, very surprised. I know a few self-declared 'anime buffs' who haven't seen it on the basis that it's old. Ridiculous, but true.

I don't have a top 5 series myself, because... well, because I haven't actually seen that many all the way through (or even enough to have a top 5; if Akira counts, then I'm at 4, dohoho). I don't really watch much anime; I'm more often than not just screwing around with videogames or watching surreal and nonsensical John K. cartoons to get away from constantly thinking.

EDIT: Censor filter's acting the t*sser (Mega-Hyper Bypass Rule-Break, GO!!) again. 'Scr*wing'? Really?
