Thread: Ever wonder what all these images were all about?

I always wondered if they would ever explain who these people/creatures/locations are. Are they just random pieces of art just thrown in there? Are they connected to the race responsible for the creation of The Galactic Leyline? What are your thoughts about this?

When I first saw this in 2001, when I was 11, my initial impression was just random art used that told something about the OLS universe.

Beyond that, I did not give it much thought.

Should the art be something more significant, it may fall into the land of fan fiction.

I read somewhere that it was supposed to represent humanity's history of exploration so its images prior to OLS.

Did you find any more information on this?

The Leyline theory is a good one. I wish it were true, but as far as I know they mean nothing. The artist, Hicaru Tanaka, worked on the paintings for several weeks, guided only by the lyrics from the ending song Hiru no Tsuki. (This is the song that was translated to English and sung by Emilie Brown, featured in the episodes Grave of the Dragon and Maze of Despair, and commonly known as Melfina's Song.)

It's thanks to the Blu-ray release that we have this artwork in much better quality, but it's unlikely that it has much meaning relevant to the show. However, the song itself is about Melfina, also existing in a different form as the Maiden of the Leyline. Make of that as you will.

Hmmmm...I would have liked to see what they would have done with endings in later seasons if they had existed.

I had this same question a few years ago. i don't remember where i read this but there was an article saying that the artist had been hired to do concept art for the anime. obviously the artwork was on a much higher quality level than what would be used for an anime usually, aswell as the fact that the art didnt necesarily look like the manga enough. I think they just put it at the end because they didn;t use it but they are obviously really amazing. so to answer your question, basically they were supposed to be pictures of melfina and a few other characters from the manga.

According to this wiki article, the artist was asked to work on an idea which turned out to be Outlaw Star, but was asked to paint something different to normal anime art. I never saw anything about him being asked to paint Melfina. I'm not sure where you got that info. He was hired more than half a year after the Outlaw Star manga started its serialisation. I remember having concept art of Melfina from significantly before the manga started. (In other words, Outlaw Star was conceptualised quite some time before its one-shot manga.)

Hicaru was hired because of his distinct style but I don't think there's any relation between the artwork and Melfina. Do share the article if you find it though.
